254 SMO sheet is a very high-end stainless steel with almost double the mechanical properties of 300 series steel in most cases. 254 SMO stainless steel plate has high impact resistance and toughness, corrosion resistance under high chloride conditions, crevice corrosion resistance, pitting corrosion resistance and very high tensile strength.

WERKSTOFF NR. 1.4547 is a cost-effective alternative to high nickel and titanium alloys for some applications. Machining is difficult due to the lack of sulphur content and the extremely high rate of work hardening; however, the use of overpowered machine tools, sharp tools, good amount of lubrication, positive feed and low speed help to provide good machining results.

1. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STAINLESS STEEL ALLOY 254 SMO

This alloy has a high nickel content and about 6 percent molybdenum, together with copper and nitrogen additions. The alloy was developed, along with a series of others, to resist stress corrosion cracking in boiling chloride solutions. It is relatively easy to fabricate and weld.
